“It’s an academic conference!”
“No, it’s a Tolkien party!”
Stop! You’re both right!

Mythmoot III Recap
Special Guest LOTRO Chief Lore Monkey Chris Pierson
Extrapolating from the Mythmoot II theme of Adapting Tolkien in Music and Art, Mythmoot III focuses its main agenda on World-Building. We will be joined by the Senior World-Builder of The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), a massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) that is very popular among a portion of the Tolkien fanbase — as well as a portion of Mythgard students.
Chris Pierson hails from Canada and now lives in Boston with his wife Rebekah and their two disturbingly articulate children, Chloe and Quentin. He moved to the States to work as a designer for Turbine Games, the originator of LOTRO. His tenure at Turbine goes back to the beginning of LOTRO, and he has many stories and insights to share about the challenges, joys and frustrations of aligning the game as accurately as possible with Tolkien’s legendarium. Not surprisingly, Chris’s task requires a deep knowledge of Middle-earth lore, and as self-described Chief Lore Monkey, among other things he has more than a passing acquaintance with Sindarin and the Black Speech.
Chris’s deeds include credits on other games including Asheron’s Call, Asheron’s Call 2, and Dungeons & Dragons Online, but his accomplishments don’t end at the gaming screen. He has published eight novels and numerous short stories, and is currently finishing his first children’s book.
The conference agenda included a presentation by Chris on Saturday as well as a question and answer session on Sunday. For both LOTRO aficionados and others, his stories about creating Tolkien’s world were one of the most interesting parts of Mythmoot!
