Riddles in the Dark Takes on Goblins and Orcs (and Zomborcs!)
Mythgard Institute brings you another Riddles in the Dark episode. In this installment, Prof. Corey Olsen and Dave Kale talk about goblins and orcs as they appear in Tolkien’s book and then consider the role these groups will play in Peter Jackson’s films. A list of character blurbs from Warner Brothers helps in conjecture about Azog, Bolg, and the Great Goblin. Azog is apparently alive…but how? Did he survive “the great battle of the Orcs and Dwarves,” or was he brought back to life by someone…say, like the Necromancer? And if the latter, what would that make him? A Zomborc?
Plus two bonus!
Bonus 1: Dave and Corey were stumped about what the riddle should be for this episode, so Corey opened it up to the folks who were listening live via the Mythgard Netmoot. Trish joined in while the group brainstormed ideas (and Dave worked out technical issues). This “backstage” session is included in the first 18 or so minutes of the recording before the official show starts.
Bonus 2: You get to hear Dave say “canard.”
Riddle: What will happen to the Great Goblin in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey?
A. Gandalf kills him in their encounter with the goblins in the Misty Mountains (book answer).
B. Thorin kills him in their encounter with the goblins in the Misty Mountains.
C. He is killed by someone else (e.g., Bilbo, one of his henchman) in the encounter in the Misty Mountains.
D. He survives and shows up again in this or the other films.
