The second episode of Riddles in the Dark is here!
In this session, Dave Kale and Corey Olsen discuss the extraordinary sequence of misfortunes that afflicted the House of Durin, including their exile from Khazad-Dûm, the coming of Smaug to Erebor, and finally the tragedies of Thror and Thráin. They explore Thror’s story and gruesome death as it is recounted in Appendix A of LOTR and The Quest for Erebor, and they connect it to the story of The Hobbit, particularly through Thorin’s family artifacts and the wars between the dwarves and goblins. Finally, they speculate on what role Thror may play in the upcoming film, particularly in the light of casting news, and confess a foreboding about the Battle of Azanulbizar. The episode culminates in bold predictions about Thror’s murder on the doorstep of Moria.
How will Thror’s death be portrayed?
(A) The full gruesome scene will unfold on-screen, including Nar picking up Thror’s disembodied head.
(B) The story will be told by a character, probably Thorin.
(C) It will be mentioned in brief, probably in reference to the wars between the Goblins and the Dwarves.
(D) It will be left out, and the origins of the War of the Dwarves and Goblins will be changed.
