Riddles in the Dark Digest 2.03: “Black Spiders and White Harts” on Riddles in the Dark Digest #2.03

Trish Lambert and Laura Berkholtz wonder about the elves dwelling in Mirkwood. Are they living at peace? In strife? Are they using magic to keep out the evil that is spreading throughout Mirkwood? Or are they just staying home drinking too much Dorwinian wine? Covering Riddles in the Dark Episode 2.03, we review analyst and listener predictions and comments on how the Mirkwood elves are protecting their boundaries in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

Thanks to The Lonely Mountain Band for the use of their music in this podcast. The music we are using for both the intro and outro of the Digest is “The Anvil Procession” from the Songs of the Dwarves CD.

Regarding the conundrum – I also cannot believe that Peter Jackson will resist sending a white moose/caribou/reindeer through the forest. It can lead Thorin to anticipate the presence of the woodelves and maybe even want to look for them. But he will be thwarted by Bombur’s incapacitation in the enchanted stream.

Perhaps Jackson placed Thranduil’s giant white deer mount at the Smaug invasion scene for the very reason that the hart, hind & fawns were seen in Mirkwood in the book. A re-appearance of that species of deer will signal the dwarves and also the viewers that Thranduil’s folk are nearby.

Yes. There will be a white/black deer showing up in Mirkwood. This will only make book-fans happy, so any smart film-maker would do this.
